Hockey season returned to Brandon with a bang on Friday, September 19, as fans filled the Assiniboine Credit Union Place at the Keystone Centre for the Brandon Wheat Kings Home Opener. The night marked more than just the start of another WHL season – it was a celebration of community, partnership, and Wheat City pride.
Game day kicked off early at 3:30 PM with the Assiniboine Credit Union–sponsored pre-game tailgate party inside the UCT Pavilion (changed from the East side). Fans of all ages poured in to enjoy free food, games, giveaways, food trucks, and live music from Kates Outlaw. Willie and his mascot buddies made their rounds, posing for photos and bringing plenty of smiles. For many, the tailgate was the perfect chance to reconnect with friends, family, and fellow fans before heading into the arena.
Inside the newly unveiled Assiniboine Credit Union Place, the excitement carried over as the Wheat Kings took on the Moose Jaw Warriors. 4,300 fans entered with an Assiniboine Credit Union branded rally towel in hand, setting the stage for an electric atmosphere. In-game contests, a 360 photobooth, and promotions kept the crowd buzzing between plays, while the traditional 7th Player youth skate was a highlight before the puck officially dropped.
The unveiling of Assiniboine Credit Union Place was a special moment. The new name represents a milestone partnership between Assiniboine Credit Union and the Keystone Centre, reinforcing a shared commitment to investing in Brandon and surrounding communities. By celebrating the home opener with fans, the partnership showed its dedication to supporting events that bring people together and create lasting memories.
The Wheat Kings may have been the main attraction on the ice, but the real victory of the night was the spirit in the stands and the sense of community throughout the event. From tailgate fun to the final horn, the energy from Westman fans made the home opener a true success.
Thank you to the Brandon Wheat Kings organization, the Keystone Centre team, and everyone who came out to celebrate the start of the season. Here’s to many more great nights of hockey and community at Assiniboine Credit Union Place at the Keystone Centre!
