Branch Closure – National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Date: September 21, 2021

Westoba Credit Union will recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30. In respect of this day, all Westoba branches and corporate offices will be closed on this date and reopen for service on Friday, October 1.

In June, Ottawa declared Sept. 30 the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation — a federal statutory holiday. The Province of Manitoba announced on September 3rd that it will observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to recognize the history and trauma caused by residential schools.

“Westoba encourages our members to use this day as an opportunity to reflect on the responsibility we all have in advancing reconciliation,” said Jim Rediger, Westoba President & CEO.”  “We all play a part in strengthening our communities; learning more about the history of indigenous people in our province and the role we play in Truth & Reconciliation is a positive step forward.”

Learn the history of Orange Shirt Day
Thursday, September 30, is Orange Shirt Day and honours residential school survivor Phyllis Webstad’s story of having her new orange shirt taken away from her on her first day of school at the St. Joseph Mission Residential School in Williams Lake, BC. Where you buy your shirt matters-  There are many online retailers selling orange t-shirts and stolen designs that are not affiliated with Indigenous people. The best way to show your support for Indigenous peoples is to purchase an official ‘Every Child Matters’ shirt from an official shirt retailer like London Drugs or Staples. You can also visit orangeshirtday.org for a full list of retailers. #OrangeShirtDay
