Meet Our 2024 Student Bursary Recipient!

Date: July 25, 2024

Westoba Credit Union is pleased to announce the 2024 recipient of our $1000 Student Bursary!

Our Student Bursary Contest took place in June, where we asked 2024 Manitoba High School Graduates about their outstanding school and community contributions and what being a credit union member means to them for a chance to win a $1000 bursary towards their educational goals.

“At the heart of Westoba’s values lies our commitment to supporting people and communities,” says Janet Wood, Westoba’s Chief Operations & Strategy Officer. “We feel it’s important to reward students who align to those values through demonstrating a leadership commitment in their school and community. Embracing ways to positively influence peers, volunteering to support initiatives that support a bright future should be rewarded and that is what our bursary represents.”

Congratulations to our 2024 bursary winner, Courtney Langan!

Courtney exemplifies an unwavering dedication to their academic pursuits, demonstrating a profound commitment to their studies. Beyond the impressive scholastic achievements, Courtney exhibits a genuine love for community, consistently engaging in various local initiatives. A passion for helping others shines through their volunteer work, and active participation in community services projects, making Courtney a deserving recipient of the 2024 Westoba Credit Union Student Bursary.

“Westoba is proud to award our 2024 bursary to Courtney Langan. Their educational goals, coupled with a commitment to building a positive future, are exactly what we look for in our recipients,” says Wood.

Excerpt from Courtney’s submission:

Hi, my name is Courtney Langan! I am entering my first year of Business Administration program at Assiniboine Community College, with a major in Financial Services. I am dedicated to academic excellence, athletic achievement, and excellence in sportsmanship and citizenship through community involvement, making an outstanding contribution! Academically, I received Honour Role recognition, and was the recipient of the Askew Memorial Scholarship for Highest Academic Standing in History.

You will find that I display leadership qualities and excellence in volunteerism in school and community events and programs. I have been an integral part in planning and helping with school activities and events: School Spirit Leadership, Graduating Committee, Lifeguarding at school sporting events. Competing in athletics has challenged me, and has been very rewarding, instilling principles of dedication, sportsmanship, teamwork, while significantly promoting community, making an outstanding contribution.

Being a credit union member, for me, means financial support through life’s changes. When I was just a baby, my parents opened up a RESP for me, to save money to help support me through college. Then they opened up a trust account for me, where I deposited my lemonade stand money, birthday money, and babysitting money, while instilling in be the value of money. Then I opened up my own personal savings account, depositing my first paycheck as a Lifeguard. Through financial training in school, I constructed a 1-year and 5-year budget to include income and expenses such as rent: tuition and textbooks fees, cell phone, travel. I plan to apply for a student visa, open a tax-free savings account and finance the purchase of my first vehicle through Westoba!
