Protecting Your Identity And Security: Why We Ask For ID

Date: November 1, 2024

At Westoba Credit Union, the safety and security of our members is our top priority. Recently, with increasing our efforts in fraud protection and new faces in the branches, we’ve implemented a new process to ask for identification for more transaction types in-person, including inquiries, withdrawals, deposits, and bill payments. While these changes may feel like an extra step, it’s one designed with your protection in mind.

Here’s why asking for ID is not just necessary, but as beneficial to you as a member:

Safeguarding your identity

Your identity is one of your most valuable assets, and unfortunately, it’s also one of the most targeted by fraudsters. By verifying ID for specific transactions, we’re insuring that only you can access your account and sensitive information.

This small step helps protect against identity theft, ensuring your money and personal remain secure.

Enhancing account security and protecting your data

Whether it’s a withdrawal or deposit, a bill payment, or simply an account inquiry, every transaction with your account comes with a risk if handled improperly. Asking for ID ensures that your account activity is authorized and accurate. This protects you from potential unauthorized transactions and provides peace of mind.

In today’s digital world, protecting sensitive information is more important than ever. Verifying your identity ensure that your data stays in the right hands, reducing the likelihood of breaches or misuse.

Meeting compliance standards

As part of our commitment to transparency and trust, we also adhere to compliance regulations set forth by financial authorities such as FINTRAC. Verifying ID is a critical component of these regulations, allowing us to meet legal requirements for reporting and fraud protection. These measures are not just about compliance-they’re about creating a safer financial environment for everyone.

We understand that these additional steps may require a little extra time during your visit and can serve as a bit of an inconvenience, but this small step plays a big role in ensuring your safety and peace of mind. At Westoba, we’re committed to making your member experience safe and secure, while maintaining the highest level of service.

If you have any questions about our ID verification process, please speak with your branch representative.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we continue to prioritize your security.
