There are over 1.3 million businesses operating in Canada today. Of these businesses, 98% have 100 employees or less, a key factor in the definition of “small business”. In fact, in Manitoba, over 70% of those in the workforce are employed by a small business. Add to this number, those who work in medium-sized enterprises, (businesses with 100 – 499 employees), and the total number of Canadians employed in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) reaches nearly 91%. In Canada, nine out of 10 employees who work in the private sector work in SMEs. Every year, 33,000 hopeful entrepreneurs start new small businesses! In 2015, Manitoba’s small businesses contributed 26% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the province, and nationally 41% of Canada’s GDP comes from Canada’s 1.2 million small- and medium-sized businesses.
